John Ryan's Church Studio
These are exclusive images of artist John Ryan's church studio, restored with loving care by him over a period of eight years.

The Protestant church which was designed by acclaimed Victorian architect Patrick Welland, had lain vacant for four years before John set his eye on it. It took one and a half years to complete the sale and since then it has been home and studio.

Recently, the archivist from St Patricks Cathedral donated an original King James bible and Hymn board after John said it was the only thing still missing from the mise en scene.

As part of the restoration, John laid down new wooden floors in white oak.

John finds life in the church studio gives him a great charge and he loves the way that the coloured sunlight coming through the stained glass windows travels across the walls during the day. If you look at his paintings you can see these colours picked up in his own work.

Every New Years Eve, John has a party in the church and rings in the New Year with his own original 1850 Sheridan church bell which is contained in the belfry !
